The souks (markets) certainly have there charm, i felt like i was in some kind of Aladdin dream world! They are filled with lamps, mirrors, spices, and everything is so vibrant and beautiful HOWEVER in 45 degree heat, the combination of exhaustion & being pestered takes its toll . I have always considered myself of someone who loves the heat, the hotter the better i always think (i’ve now seriously reevaluated this theory) so id say check the forecast before book and have a serious think about how much heat you can take. We restored to taking a few baths in sinks and running out wrists under the taps, which actually works surprisingly well.
So after an hour or two we sensibly opted for roof top bars and cafes to witness the chaos beneath us, ice coffee in hand. When i visited with my boyfriend last year in may (about 20 degrees cooler) we actually had loads of fun bartering and came home with a suitcaseful of treats which now decorate my room. But as two girls travelling alone i think we got a little tired of the unwanted male attention. Which is bit of a shame, but we were both amazed by the beauty of Medersa Ben Youssef in the photos above and both agreed it was worth the adventure through the medina to find.
